Impossible Figure: 2008-10-22

Notice: I recently added a page about the history and details about my Impossible Figures, check it out!

It took me quite a while to decide how to start the work on this figure. It felt a bit too daunting in the beginning when tried to create the initial geometry out of a bunch of floating bars, but I settled for a simpler and actually better method to realize it. As it is fairly complex it was hard to write any explanatory text, but I guess it does not really need that.

The general shape of this figure is a triangle, but it is more intricate than that. It is actually a double tribar with another three double tribars attached to it, making it a quad-double tribar!

I am very interested in this image as a tattoo idea–I have been fascinated with triangles for a long time and I have many reasons for choosing a triangle as a subject. This triangle has just the right amount of complexity, and the notion of impossible figures is an attractive one as well. What would be your policy on permission to use this figure as a starting point for a tattoo? I am an artist myself, and it would feel wrong to appropriate without asking…

    Thank you!

  2. Thank you for your interest!

As long as you do not charge money for the derivative design you end up with I am perfectly fine with it. If you need something else than the versions I have right here on the blog, please mention it below and I will contact you. And I would of course greatly appreciate getting a link to any results :)
