Whoa! Finally! I have been hyped by the new Twentyten theme since I first heard about it and since upgrading to WordPress 3 I have been looking to swap out the old Kubrick Default theme I had modified in 2008.
When hacking away at the previous theme I tried to mold it into something that felt like my own unique site and I did it quite quickly because what I really wanted was a public place for publishing content. While I think the end result looked pretty nice and I was satisfied with the design it has felt very old as of lately as it still looked quite similar to the original theme.
Tweaking the new default theme this time around went even quicker than last time, with better results too, I think! In two evenings I put together the top banner and in another evening I had changed around most of the styles and PHP I wanted to. Twentyten was ridiculously easy to modify as all changes were made via a child theme, and most things in the CSS makes very much sense so I haven’t really gotten stuck on anything yet :)
There are still a few details I want to adjust and I haven’t even started looking at customizing the menu yet (Update: done now!), but all in all I am very happy with the new look :D After getting some inspiration by sites that sure were one column sites I had decided to aim for a single column site myself too, as to bring down the amount of clutter. Most previous widgets you could find in the right sidebar are now at the bottom. The pages are accessed via the top menu and the large list of links have been moved to a separate page.
Doing this gives me the same kind of joy and sense of freshness that rearranging my home does :) fabulous!
